The Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure

The Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was founded in 1994, the year after the first Komen Denver Race for the Cure, to carry out the promise of our National organization — to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. The Affiliate continually strives to meet this promise through three core activities — education, fundraising and grant making.

Education efforts focus on spreading the message that early detection saves lives. Through an active speaker’s bureau, participation in community health fairs, the annual Multicultural Conference, outreach to the medically underserved and the Young Women’s Program, volunteers and staff effectively convey this message in our community. A primary focus is to promote good breast health and early detection of breast cancer within our 12-county service areas including Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Clear Creek, Denver, Douglas, Gilpin, Jefferson, Larimer, Park and Summit Counties. Within these counties, we provide breast health education to medically underserved and under-or un-insured women and men.

In addition to our signature fundraising event, the Komen Denver Race for the Cure®, the Affiliate hosts the annual Pink Tie Affair™ and is the grateful beneficiary of dozens of third party events and initiatives throughout the year. Corporate and individual donor support also contributes to our fund raising success. As a highly volunteer-involved organization, we keep our expenses very low, maximizing the dollars that go toward our mission.

The Affiliate is well-recognized as a leader in grant making, having awarded more than $20 million to a wide variety of non-profits that provide breast health/breast cancer services to the uninsured and underinsured in our 12-county service area since 1993. The Affiliate is currently funding 32 projects, totally more than $2.9 million. In addition, we contribute 25 percent of annual net revenue to breast cancer research through our National organization.
